A Neglected Horse That Was Saved From The Brink Of Death Is Now Winning Awards

When volunteers from the British Horse Society stumbled across this terrible scene, they couldn’t stop crying. A horse was seated in the mud next to a construction site in East Durham, England, as if she had vanished. That’s what the rescue squad assumed at first! Heidi, the poor horse, was in awful shape. She couldn’t even breathe, let alone stand on her own.

The British Horse Society volunteers, on the other hand, realized they had to give her a chance. So they took the malnourished pony to a shelter and attempted to help her. “The volunteer was horrified by what she first thought was a dead horse amongst the mud and rubbish,” the rescue said on Facebook. “Moments later however, the horse was seen to be breathing and the shocked volunteer quickly made a call for assistance.”

When Heidi was rescued, everyone realized it would be an almost impossible task to get her back on her feet. But the wonderful horse proved she’s a survivor, and after going through terrible ordeals, she made an astonishing recovery. Even though it took her more than five weeks to be able to stand on her own, no one would recognize her now, over a year apart.

“The early days were touch and go, as we dealt with her serious weakness and such a low blood protein level that a plasma transfusion was required,” Wendy Suddes of the charity Here4Horses told BORED PANDA. “It took months and months to get Heidi well enough to run free in our pastures.”

Heidi is a completely different animal now, following months of medical attention and a hard road to recovery. She regained her weight and her hair grew back. She has a beautiful mane and appears to be in good spirits. But, most importantly, she’s now fine and healthy, and she’s also a rosette-winning horse. Watch Heidi’s incredible transformation, here:
